The City of Petrinja

The City of Petrinja is located on the right bank of the Kupa, at the mouth of the Petrinjčica. The area of ​​the town of Petrinja is an integral part of Sisak-Moslavina County and covers an area of ​​380.94 km2.

In the middle of the 16th century, the bishops of Zagreb built a series of stone towers in the strategic positions of Banovina for defense against the Turks. This is evidenced by the remains of former cities.

History

Petrinja’s strategically significant position was probably the cause of almost constant fighting on the territory of historical Banovina. Petrinja changed its original location from a medieval fortress located at the foot of Zrinska gora to the Pokupska plain.

The old medieval Petrinja, the first written evidence of which dates back to 1240, with the charter of Bela IV. it received the privileges of a free royal city. After the collapse of the old Petrinja, in 1592 the Turks led by Hasan Pasha Predojević built Yeni Hisar or New Town, i.e. the new Petrinja, with the aim of conquering the well-fortified Sisak.
